Bird Songs

Bird Songs is a touring installation consisting of 15 holographic videos of birds housed in varnished black wooden boxes. The visuals are accompanied by a soundtrack that blends bird songs with human voices, exploring our symbolic relationship with birds – specifically as messengers that cross physical and metaphorical bridges.

The work is adaptable: there are currently two versions available. One features imagined birds created with communities using AI tools; the other features robins. New versions can be developed to respond to specific sites, seasons, or local cultures.

The audio blends multiple voices and bird songs. Like the visuals, the soundtrack can be specifically created to suit a particular project or location.

The installation works in both nature and urban environments, as a dense “flock” or spread across a site as a trail for the public to follow. The houses can be hung from trees, attached to street furniture, or placed on bespoke weighted stands.

Each box is carefully lit to make the holographic birds appear lifelike. The background is visible behind the birds, making it appear as if they are actually there.
