Waterside Wonders

Please note: This installation was a bespoke project, designed to be displayed as part of the Gravesham Light Festival in Gravesend, Kent.

Bringing history to life
Waterside Wonders was created as a tribute to the historic riverside communities that contributed to Gravesend’s identity in the 1800s and early 1900s. The Bawley fishing boats that gave their name to the bay now housing the former St Andrew’s Riverside Mission were a constant sight on the River Thames, as the popularity of shrimp grew. Waterside Wonders was a project underpinned by a foundation of research into the history and heritage of the riverside communities. Using local library resources, ancestry records, historic maps, and old photographs, this project aimed to bring these forgotten stories to life through animation. The ghostly images of those from the past once again occupying Bawley Bay.

Touching hearts
One of the onlookers remarked that they “thought the projections on the little church were amazing, [and] brought the riverside alive”. Whilst another noted that they were “truly captivated by the moving pictures on St Andrew’s – my favourite part of the event.” Another member of the audience was delighted to see one of her ancestors, Ezekiel Warner, take part in the display, standing proud on his Bawley Boat.

Artist Bio

Howard is a creative heritage practitioner, project manager and experienced educator with over 25 years’ experience designing and delivering inclusive, skills-based learning and public engagement activities. He is experienced in developing collection-inspired creative programmes, managing collaborative projects, and working with diverse audiences across educational and community contexts. He has a strong background in visual storytelling, digital media and interpretation of place and history through participatory practice. Although he is Kent-based and actively engages in regional cultural initiatives, he also travels with his work across the UK and Europe.
