Nurul Wardani is a lighting designer whose practice spans theatre, live events, and immersive installations. Drawing from both architectural and theatrical approaches to light, her work explores atmosphere, temporality, and the relationship between light and space. She is also co-founder of Slice of Light, a multidisciplinary design collective specialising in lighting design, projection mapping, and video visuals for performance and live experiences.
Noctilucent is an immersive installation that investigates how light can shape our perception of volume and spatial presence. Through the projection of light into haze-filled environments, the work creates ephemeral forms that appear to occupy and transform space. Inspired by atmospheric phenomena and patterns found in nature, the installation combines light, movement, and atmosphere to generate continuously shifting spatial experiences.
By revealing light as a tangible and dynamic material, Noctilucent invites visitors to engage with the environment in new ways, experiencing space not as a fixed container but as something fluid, responsive, and alive.

The work stems from an interest in the tension between control and unpredictability, and the programme provides the time, resources and mentorship to develop these ideas in ways that might not otherwise be possible. Zhiyan Cai is a digital and light artist working across projection mapping, holographic projection, public installation, and 3D animation. Her work explores cultural memory, mythology, and contemporary technology through immersive experiences that combine light and moving image. Her commissions include Portal: Cabinet of Curiosity No.2 for Cody Dock and Portal: Those Far Away for St James’s Piccadilly, and her work has been presented internationally at festivals and exhibitions. She has also completed an artist residency at the Digital Art Centre and developed her outdoor light practice through our SPARK 2025 programme.
Portal: Another Path is a 3-metre-tall light installation that combines projection mapping with forced perspective to create the illusion of a hidden garden pathway within the city. As visitors move around the structure, a glowing two-dimensional image transforms into a seemingly deep corridor, revealing a magical 3D spatial experience.
Using movement as its primary form of interaction, the installation invites audiences to pause, explore, and see urban nature from a new perspective. Accessible and intuitive, it offers an engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
“I’m honoured to be selected for this year’s SHINE programme. After being selected last year for SPARK, Light Up The North’s development programme for emerging light artists, I gained practical experience through festival visits, peer discussions and technical consultations. That support strengthened my production skills and gave me a more mature foundation for this new commission. I’m excited to continue working with Light Up The North and develop a more ambitious Portal installation with producers and technical specialists.”
