Crystal Flowers

Crystal Flowers

Crystal Flowers is a beautiful fibre optic lighting installation consisting of 600 individual handmade illuminated flowers. With a mixture of translucent and transparent plastics, the display is a combination of subtle glows and reflections, which draw the audience in and catch their gaze.

The twisting winding stems, the petals, stigma and stamen will all glow with captivating colour changing light which, with programmed effects, seem as if they are moving around and dancing in the wind.

Hundreds of recycled plastic bottles have been carefully cut, moulded and shaped by hand into realistic flowers of different sizes and shapes, each one unique.

Crystal Flowers is a reminder to take your time more often, be mindful and appreciate the stunning natural world around us and reconnect with nature.

Mycelium

Mycelium network is an example of the hidden underground connections between mushrooms, plants and trees. Beneath the ground across the planet there are millions of fine roots called hyphae which play an important part in nature.

Mycelium plays an important roll in protecting the environment and providing for humanity. Apart from providing us with food and medicine, mycelium can save and regenerate trees and plants after forest fires and they can even break down toxins in polluted soils and turn them into harmless by-products.

After developing a passion for mushrooms and mycelium, I knew I had to create a lighting display which would represent this amazing phenomenon and raise awareness of this incredible species.

It has become very popular and has toured several UK sites in 2023 and has also been in several different countries around the world in early 2024 with lots more planned for lighting trails around the UK this winter.

Just like real mushrooms which can be found on every continent, my artwork has been tested through the harshest snow blizzards in the north of iceland, to the baking sun in South Africa and Australia.

I thoroughly enjoy creating a different design and keep trying to make the display bigger and better.

Its a very colourful, animated display which seems as if its alive and communicating. The ever changing, beautiful transition of colours is simply mesmerising which makes it very popular with the crowds who will often stand and stare, take videos and photos and talk about.

Core

Welcome to CORE. An installation inspired by the natural environment and the geothermal, lava spewing landscape of Iceland.

I was successful in applying for a position at NES artist residency in Skagastrond, Iceland where myself and several other artists from all over the world stayed for a number of weeks where we each created a light themed artwork to be installed outdoors for their annual Light Up festival.

Before i was even accepted, my mind was already racing with new designs and ideas (it never really stops!).

I knew i wanted to do some sort of volcano/fissure as Iceland is well known for its volcanos and geothermal activity however id usually always want to do a site visit first, which often leads to a eureka moment and something is usually affirmed in my mind. I am very visual and sometimes i just need to look at the surroundings and landscape to come up with an idea. It could be a patch of grass, a tree, or in this case, a pile of rocks.

Overall it was a brilliant experience. I met some amazing people, seen some amazing sites and went through a whirlwind of emotions but most importantly I came home with new artwork that I’m really excited to develop and install at future events.

As usual with my artwork it is completely scalable and can be customised to compliment different features and landscapes.
