The SPARK programme is dedicated to nurturing and developing emerging artists with an interest in working with light. By focusing on inclusivity and diversity, SPARK provides a platform to support new talent in the light art sector through tailored workshops, networking opportunities, and events hosted at our partner festivals.
In 2024, SPARK collaborated with our partners at Light Up Lancaster and Light Night Wigan to deliver a bespoke package of workshops, talks and networking opportunities. 2024’s SPARK cohort included: Jardel Rodrigues, Linda Wachaga, Rachel Rea, Lauren Devere, Eben Clancy, Shakira Stellar, Josie Ireland, Layla Jabbari, Sonia Levesque, and Chris Ruffoni. Each artist received a bursary, along with funds to cover travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs.
The programme fostered a highly collaborative environment with the cohort reporting that networking with fellow SPARK artists was a highly successful aspect of the experience. This exchange of ideas and perspectives enriched the cohort’s understanding of the light art sector. Additionally, all the participants expressed feeling inspired by the opportunity to meet and engage with experienced light artists. These interactions provided invaluable insights into the creative and professional journeys of established artists, offering inspiration and practical knowledge to the emerging talents.

The programme also excelled in supporting the development of essential skills and knowledge. All participants reported gaining valuable insights into promoting their work and understanding the operational aspects of light festivals. A key focus was on the fabrication of safe and durable installations as well as training in digital software. This approach equipped the artists to navigate the technical and creative demands of the light art industry.
